Collecta prehistory: Mammoth play set The bones of animals sometimes end up in the nets of fishermen. Those animals lived thousands of years ago, but are now extinct. They're mammoths, distant relatives of the elephant. Mammoths lived in prehistoric times. That was the time of hunters and collectors, more than thousands of years ago. It was very cold in the Netherlands at the time. That's what we call an ice age. The North Sea was dry then. That's where mammoths lived and that's why their bones are sometimes still found on the seabed. All parts of the skeleton were fished at least once. Bones have also been excavated in other places in the Netherlands.
