Cobi Historical Collection ORP Orzel kit One of the most modern submarines in the Allied fleets at the outbreak of the Second World War, two Polish Orzel-class ships, ORP Orzel and ORP Sęp, were built by the Royal Society of the Scheldt from Vlissingen The construction of the Orzel began in August 1936 and was completed on 26 January 1939. On February 2, 1939, the ship was taken into service in the Polish Navy. During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the Orzel, together with the other Polish submarines, carried out the Worek plan. During one of the patrols of plan Worek the commander of Orzeł Kloczkowski became unwell and wished to be dropped off at the port of Tallinn which was located in Neutral Estonia. Lying in the Estonian port, the Orzel was seized and disarmed by the Estonian government. The same weekend as the seizure, the crew of the Orzeł managed to escape with the ship and eventually moved to the United Kingdom From the United Kingdom, Orzeł carried out seven war patrols off the Swedish coast. During one of these patrols the Orzeł managed to sink a German troopship. From the seventh patrol the ship never returned, it is suspected that the Orzeł has walked on a mine.
