Collecta Wild animal musk ox The musk ox is the northernmost common hoofed animal. He is more related to goats than to cattle. The musk ox is heavily built. Both the male and the female have horns that cover the top of the skull, just like a buffalo. He has a thick woolly undercoat and an outer coat with, especially in winter, very long, drooping hairs. His name owes the muskosos to the strong smell of the males in the mating season. To conquer a harem, rutting males fight by hitting each other's heads. In defense against wolves in particular, a herd sometimes forms a circle around the young animals, with the heads pointing outwards.
